The Wii U GameCube adapter only works with Super Smash Bros.

October 10, 2014 by Tom Powter

Despite a product listing saying that the upcoming GameCube controller adapter for Wii U will work for a number of Wii U titles such as Mario Kart 8, Nintendo has confirmed that this is not the case.

The GameCube controller adapter is only compatible with Super Smash Bros. and no other existing Wii U, Wii or Virtual Console titles. A Nintendo UK spokesperson told Eurogamer: “The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.”

The move will likely disappoint gamers who were hoping to use the GameCube controller – often considered one of Nintendo’s best ever controllers – for the rest of their games, and may make that $20 price point seem a little high to use with just a single game. The adapter will launch alongside Super Smash Bros. in North America on November 21st.
