Dredd sequel “not off the agenda”

May 16, 2013 by admin

Many people found it disheartening that last year’s Dredd, starring Karl Urban, didn’t do the business that would guarantee it a sequel. With a modest (for this genre) budget of $45 million, the comic book film grossed only $36 million. Sad times indeed.

It did however receive generally positive reviews and fans of the comic (plus Dredd co-creator Jon Wagner) appreciated it. When this was mentioned to Urban in an interview whilst doing the rounds for Star Trek Into Darkness, he had this to say:

“Interestingly enough I did have breakfast with [producer and writer] Alex Garland this morning.  It’s not off the agenda.  Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it.  It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another instalment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen.  The power of fandom can resurrect projects.  In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek.  They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.”

So, there you have it. Urban has said several times before how he loves the character and would be willing to return. Garland has mentioned he has ideas for how the series could progress, so it seems that the only things not in place are finance and a business case. Now the rest of us have a job to do!
