Comic Book Review – Star Wars #5

May 10, 2013 by admin

Robb Ghag reviews Star Wars #5…

“After their resupply mission for the Rebel Alliance is exposed to the Empire, Han Solo and Chewbacca seek refuge in the Coruscant underworld, where they are being hunted by Boba Fett.  Meanwhile at the construction site of the second Death Star, Darth Vader, having fallen from the Emperor’s favor, finds an unexpected ally in the Force… Luke Skywalker, who has been grounded for breaking mission protocol, receives a warning from the ghost of Ben Kenobi – which prompts him to further disobey orders… And Princess Leia and her elite X-wing squadron are cornered by Colonel Bircher’s Star Destroyers and his TIE interceptor group – forcing Leia and her pilots to make a stand … possibly their last“

In issue #5 of the ongoing Star Wars series Brian Wood brings princess Leia and her group into the battle with a group of new TIE fighters.  It’s been building for issues and the battle is amazingly written, not to mention drawn intricately by Carlos D’Anda.  His attention to detail truly brings everything we’ve seen in the Star Wars movie, to the comic world.  The battle is incredible and unlike most comics, actually makes you believe everything from the tactics to the explosions.

When we finally catch up to Han and Chewie on Coruscant we’re introduced to another couple of favorites from the Star Wars universe: Boba Fett and Bossk.  This section especially is gorgeously drawn and we’re also introduced to a new character: Perla.

Finally, in the last two pages we find ourselves in the Endor System, on the bridge of a Star Destroyer.  Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer.  He has appointed Birra Seah to Acting Moff status, and in the final splash page there’s an amazing drawing of Vader as he advises of the impending arrival of the Emperor.

This book is one of the best Star Wars series out now, and Brian Wood is really evolving all of the characters.  Finally, I have to admit that although Alex Ross didn’t do the cover art for this one (it was painted by Rodolfo Migliari), quite frankly I barely even noticed as the cover is absolutely stunning.
