Benedict Cumberbatch talks Smaug motion capture for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

December 4, 2014 by Robert Kojder

Smaug may be one bad-ass fire-breathing dragon with a terrifying and intimidating voice, but according to Benedict Cumberbatch performing the motion capture for him will make you feel like an idiot. Below is what the star of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies had to say on the experience.

“You get in the gear and feel like a complete knob, wandering around in these sparkling pajamas.” That doesn’t mean he hated the experience however, as he would also go on to say that “It’s the most extraordinary technology, unlike green screen, which can be really demanding.” It allowed him to be “playing this extraordinary character and just imagining everything.”

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is set for release on December 12th in the UK and December 17th in North America, with a cast that includes Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, with Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom, John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Billy Connolly, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O’Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt and Aidan Turner.
