Speaking to Associated Press, the man behind Mario, Zelda and a number of other staple Nintendo titles, Shigeru Miyamoto, has confirmed that the company is working on a console to succeed the Wii U, which is struggling to compete with the PS4 and the Xbox One.
“For the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems,” Miyamoto said in the interview. “While we’re busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be.”
It appears that while some ideas might be being thrown around, there could still be quite a while until we hear any more from Nintendo. The Wii U is two years old, and has been having a noticeably difficult time. Developers have been reluctant to embrace the Gamepad controller and as such, the console has suffered from a lack of third party software.
