Mark Schultz apologises to Bennett Miller for stinging attack on the Foxcatcher director

January 19, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Earlier this month, Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz launched a stinging attack at director Bennett Miller over what he perceived to be homosexual overtones in Foxcatcher, which is based upon Schultz’s relationship with Olympic sponsor John du Pont. Schultz declared that he “hated” Miller and “everything that scum touches”, and threatened to bring the filmmaker down and destroy his career.

Well, it seems that Schultz has since had a chance of heart in the wake of Foxcatcher’s five Oscar nominations, as the wrestler has now taken to Twitter to apologise publicly to Bennett Miller:

“Channing Tatum GOT ROBBED. HE WAS SO GOOD IT WAS UNREAL. I’m amazed he wasn’t nominated. Bennett Miller is the greatest director ever. Third time’s the charm. He’s due an Oscar. I feel terrible about what I did to Bennett. I should have followed God, not man. Foxcatcher is a miracle. I’m sorry I said I hated it. I love it. I love my interpretation and will ignore the haters. I’m never getting mad. I apologize to you before the world Bennett. I’m sorry.”

Foxcatcher stars Channing Tatum as Schultz, Steve Carell as du Pont and Mark Ruffalo as Schultz’s brother David. It is up for five Oscars – Best Director (Miller), Best Actor (Carell), Best Supporting Actor (Ruffalo), Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Makeup & Hairstyling.
