Julia Roberts to produce and star in Batkid feature

January 24, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Word has spread that Oscar winner Julia Roberts is set to grab the rights to a new documentary, Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World, which is having its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend.

Roberts is set to produce the film through her Red Om Films company alongside partners Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill, as well as star in the remake. The documentary is based on a Make-A-Wish event for Miles, a 5-year-old boy diagnosed with leukaemia, who was turned into Batman for the day in San Francisco, and had over 25,000 residents watching and participating in the event.

Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World director Dana Nachman is attached to executive produce the feature alongside original producers Josh and Dan Braun, whose company Submarine made the documentary.

“It’s thrilling to me that Ms. Roberts and her team watched our film and were so moved by it that they want to dedicate their time and creative capital to make sure the widest audience possible will know and love Miles’ story and the spirit of this intimate special event that went global, as much as we do,” says Nachman.

Batkid Begins premieres today at the Sundance Film Festival.
