According to Variety, New Line Cinema has taken a step forward with its plans to reboot the Police Academy franchise, tapping comedians Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele to oversee a new version of the once-popular comedy series alongside original creator Paul Maslansky.
The original Police Academy – which featured the likes of Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, Bubba Smith, David Graf, Michael Winslow, G.W. Bailey and George Gaynes – was released in 1984 and was a huge hit, earning almost $150 million around the globe. It went on to spawn six sequels, as well as two TV series, one animated and one live-action.
New Line has held ambitions on a new Police Academy movie for several years, with Steve Guttenberg even attached to write and direct back in 2008. The most recent version of the script has been penned by Jeremy Garelick, screenwriter behind The Break-Up.
