Disney developing a live-action Mulan

March 31, 2015 by Luke Owen

Disney’s slate of live action adaptations continues to grow with the announcement that they will next be tackling Mulan.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney have purchased a script by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hyneck that centres around female warrior Hua Mulan, the main character from the animated feature.

Originally released in 1998, Mulan told the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she can take her father’s place and go to war. As well as earning Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, Mulan brought home $304 million at the box office. It was never as popular as other 90s Disney movies like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin or The Lion King, but Mulan has its fanbase.

Disney have been on a role as of late with their live action adaptations. Cinderella has made an impressive $336.2 million worldwide, though that doesn’t quite compare to the Angelina Jolie-starring Maleficent, which brought home $758.4 million, or Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which made a staggering $1.02 billion. Disney have also announced a live action version of Beauty and the Beast, which will feature Emma Watson, Luke Evans and Dan Stevens, as well as The Jungle Book, a sequel to Alice in Wonderland and a Tim Burton-directed version of Dumbo.

The Little Mermaid and Aladdin can’t be far off, right?
