Avengers: Age of Ultron set to smash its own opening weekend box-office record

Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in the UK in less than two weeks, and in three weeks in the USA (sorry USA!), and early indications suggest the superhero sequel could be set to smash its own box office records come the first weekend in May.

The Avengers opened with a record-breaking $207.4 million back in 2012, and is expected to equal if not beat its predecessor’s mammoth opening weekend. Previews in the US will start on Thursday April 30th, and advance ticket sales started selling last month. Sales are apparently through the roof at present, and a Fandango spokesperson suggests the sequel is “significantly outselling” the first film. MovieTickets.com also states that ticket sales are “six times greater than The Avengers.”

Iron Man 3 has the second highest Marvel opening weekend with a $174.1 million opening in 2013, followed by its own predecessor, Iron Man 2 with $128 million in 2010, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy all opened close to $100 million. Age of Ultron is certain to shatter all of those debuts, and if we had our betting hat on we’d say it looks likely to surpass the first Avengers and set a new domestic record in the States.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release in the UK on April 23rd and North America on May 1st, with Joss Whedon directing a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Paul Bettany (JARVIS / The Vision), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), James Spader (Ultron), Stellen Skarsgard (Erik Selvig), Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Strucker), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Claudia Kim (Dr. Cho), Andy Serkis (Uylsses Klaw), Henry Goodman (Dr. List), Julie Delpy (Madame B) and Linda Cardellini (Laura Barton).
