Despite garnering near-universal acclaim from critics, Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 struggled to make much of an impact at the box office, with the sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi masterpiece having grossed just over $240 million worldwide.
Given its production budget of $155 million, not to mention millions in advertising, THR is reporting that Alcon Entertainment and the film’s investors are looking at a loss of around $80 million on the movie, which would have needed to break the $400 million mark worldwide in order to have broken even.
The outlet also reports that Sony is likely to recoup its $110 million investment due to the deal brokered by Sony Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
Blade Runner 2049 sees Harrison Ford reprising the role of Rick Deckard alongside Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto and Edward James Olmos.
