A few years back, when Sony was planning to launch a whole shared universe around its Amazing Spider-Man reboot, the idea of the web-slinger mixing it with Iron Man and company as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed little more than a pipe dream.
However, as we all know, Sony scrapped its plans following the negative reaction to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with the studio striking up a deal with Marvel Studios to introduce Spidey into the MCU in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
Although specifics on the deal between Sony and Marvel were never officially revealed, it has been widely reported (but not confirmed) that the agreement spans five appearances, which if true, means that it is set to expire next year following the release of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
This of course raises questions/fears about Spider-Man’s status post-Far From Home, compounded this week by comments from Venom screenwriter Jeff Pinker who suggested that, “Without revealing anything that I’m not allowed to reveal, it is not impossible that in a future/upcoming Venom movie, Spider-Man will play a significant role.”

So, does that mean that Sony plans on pulling the plug on its Marvel deal next year, opening the door for Tom Holland (or a rebooted take on the wall-crawler) to join Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters? Well, not so according to producer Amy Pascal, who has revealed to Vanity Fair that she hopes to extend the joint-custody deal between Sony and Marvel.
“I think about crying,” said Pascal when asked for her thoughts on the initial Marvel and Sony deal expiring. “I can only hope for a future where things work out. I’ve known Kevin since he was Avi Arad’s very, very quiet assistant, who for many years sat in that room listening to us and being so much smarter than any of us without any of us realizing. I will say that working with Marvel has been one of the highlights of my professional career.”
