Andy Muschietti discusses the Zack Snyder influence on The Flash

June 10, 2023 by EJ Moreno

There’s no doubt about Zack Snyder’s influence on modern superhero films, but nothing feels more inspired by his work than The Flash.

As we head into one of the final films in the DCEU, we see the Man of Steel & Batman v Superman filmmaker’s imprint all over the story for the upcoming superhero films starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, and Sasha Calle. And Muschietti has not denied that impact at all.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, The Flash director opens up about Snyder and how a conversation with his fellow DC director went.

“I talked to Zack,” Andy Muschietti tells the outlet. “But it wasn’t technical or narrative or anything. I just wanted to reach out and say, ‘Hey.’ Because we haven’t met before, and I just wanted to tell him that we would be respectful to the stuff that he did before.” Barbara Muschietti adds, “And to the cast he put together.”

The director goes further into the SnyderVerse influence of The Flash. “Man of Steel obviously is foundational to this movie because the big threat of Zod coming to Earth is a big twist in this story, and it’s something that most DC fans know very well,” he says. “And that’s one of the great things that can form the narrative of this movie.”

In Muschietti’s The Flash, written by Christina Hodson, Barry Allen seemingly travels back in time, but also to a new dimension, which coincides with the arrival of General Zod (as we saw in 2013’s Man of Steel). This time though, there’s no Justice League or Superman to help. This thrusts into a brand-new story, but it feels so rooted in the world created by Snyder.

With Zack Snyder’s Justice League serving as the unofficial send-off to the SnyderVerse, it only feels right that The Flash pays homages to what came before but attempts to carve out its own path. See what you think when The Flash hits theaters next week.

Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti (It) and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash alongside Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ben Affleck (Batman), Michael Keaton (Batman), Sasha Calle (Supergirl), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Antje Traue (Faora-Ul), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ron Livingston (Henry Allen), and Maribel Verdu (Nora Allen).

The Flash is set for release on June 16th, 2023.
