Andy Serkis was “gutted” by Snoke’s death in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

March 3, 2023 by Gary Collinson

While it certainly has its ardent supporters, many a Star Wars fan was left reeling in disappointment as Star Wars: The Last Jedi played out on screen back in 2017, and as we’ve heard in the years following, those feelings were echoed by several of the cast from the middle chapter of Disney’s Sequel Trilogy.

The likes of Mark Hamill and John Boyega have previously expressed disappointment over the handling of their characters, and it seems we can add Andy Serkis to that list, with the actor telling GQ that he was “gutted” by the death of Supreme Leader Snoke in Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII.

“Let me just phrase it like this. When I went in to read The Last Jedi, [I spent] the first 30 pages thinking, ‘This is the most incredible character,’” said Serkis in an interview with GQ. “Then I turned the page: ‘And then Snoke gets sliced in half.’ And I was gutted. Gutted.”

While Snoke’s journey in the Sequel Trilogy ultimately left Serkis unsatisfied, that isn’t the case with his recent foray to the galaxy far, far away in the role of Kino Loy in the Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor, which Serkis went on to describe as: “a masterpiece of TV-making. love that grounded Star Wars world – not that I don’t like the more operatic [style], because I do like that too. But it’s nice to see it explore the murky end of the swimming pool.”

Serkis also went on to reveal that despite his disappointment over The Last Jedi, “I actually really love [the Snoke] character, and I’m putting it out there: I wouldn’t mind if he came back.”

It remains to be seen whether Supreme Leader Snoke will make his return to the Star Wars galaxy, although the character has already been hinted at in The Mandalorian, and will presumably have to arrive on the scene at some point if Disney and Lucasfilm continue to explore that specific post-Return of the Jedi timeline.

Were you disappointed that we didn’t get to see more of Snoke in the Sequel Trilogy? Would you like to see him make his return? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
