Annette Bening joins Andy Samberg’s cryogenic rom-com 42.6 Years

March 30, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

Andy Samberg will wake from being cryogenically frozen to discover that his ex-girlfriend is being played by Annette Bening in time-jump comedy 42.6 Years.

First reported approximately 3.1 years ago with Jean Smart set as Samberg’s co-star, Deadline have confirmed that Annette Bening will now step into the role of the Brooklyn 99 star’s ex-partner, with the movie also moving from Amazon MGM Studios to Focus Features.

There’s also a change in the director’s chair, with I, Tonya‘s Craig Gillespie moving aside for The Peanut Butter Falcon helmer Michael Schwartz to take the megaphone. He will work from a script written by Seth Reiss, co-writer of The Menu, who came up with the screenplay from a story he wrote with Samberg.

In the film, Samberg and Bening will play ex-lovers who’re separated by time when he undergoes an experimental procedure to be cryogenically frozen. When he awakens 42.6 Years later, the only person he can turn to is his now much older ex-girlfriend, who has lived an entire life without him.
