Antoine Fuqua wants Denzel Washington for Scarface remake

August 5, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having originally dropped out of Universal’s long-planned Scarface remake last year, Antoine Fuqua returned to the director’s chair in February, with the studio hoping it can now finally get the project off the ground.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Diego Luna was previously cast in the lead role of an immigrant who rises through the ranks of the Los Angeles underworld to become a feared crime lord.

However, it seems Luna is no longer involved with the film, and Fuqua has already identified who he’d like to see leading the movie. And yes, you’ve probably guessed it – it’s Denzel Washington.

“My dream is for him to be Scarface,” Fuqua told THR. “He laughs sometimes and he kind of goes ‘Al Pacino did a great job! I don’t want to do that.’ [I’m still] trying to nudge him into doing it.”

Fuqua and Washington are of course frequent collaborators, having worked together on Training Day, The Equalizer, The Magnificent Seven and The Equalizer 2, while they also have plans for a third instalment of the Equalizer franchise.

Now, as great as Washington is, isn’t he a little too old to be starting out in a life of crime? Or do you think he’d be a good fit for the role? Let us know in the comments below…
