Aquaman’s Jason Momoa met with the Russos about playing a Marvel villain

July 22, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Prior to his casting as Arthur Curry in the DC Extended Universe, Aquaman star Jason Momoa was given the opportunity to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he was offered the role of Drax the Destroyer in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Momoa ultimately turned down the offer, with Dave Bautista subsequently cast in the role, and it seems this wasn’t the only time he’s had a brush with the MCU as he has revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he also met with Anthony and Joe Russo about a potential Marvel role.

“I met the Russo brothers, who are amazing. It was one of the best meetings I’ve ever had. I was going to do something with them, which unfortunately didn’t work out. It was going to be a villain, I think. People always want to hire me to play a villain, you know?”

Presumably we can discount Thanos, given that Momoa was already part of the DCEU by that point, which really only leaves two possibilities – Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Zemo in Captain America: Civil War. So it’s got to be Crossbones surely, right?

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role.  The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
