Captain America 4 enlists The Cloverfield Paradox director Julius Onah

July 8, 2022 by Gary Collinson

It seems that Anthony Mackie’s Captain America movie is readying for take-off, as Variety has revealed that Marvel Studios has enlisted The Cloverfield Paradox helmer Julius Onah to direct the as-yet-untitled Captain America 4.

The sequel will serve as follow-on from the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which ended with Mackie’s Sam Wilson accepting the mantle of Captain America which was passed on to him by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in Avengers: Endgame.

Onah made his feature debut with the 2015 thriller The Girl Is in Trouble, while he followed 20178’s The Cloverfield Paradox with 2019’s acclaimed drama Luce starring Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Tim Roth. He will direct from a script by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman and series writer Dalan Musson.

At this point, there’s no word as to who’ll be joining Mackie in the film, although we’ll more than likely see the return of at least a handful of cast members from the series, which included the likes of Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter/Power Broker) and Wyatt Russell (John Walker/US Agent).

One person who is unlikely however is the OG Cap, with Chris Evans stating recently that: “I mean it was a really unbelievable ride and the character’s just so dear to me and I’m just so precious with it. To return to the role, I mean the truth is, the role isn’t even mine anymore. The role is Anthony Mackie’s. So, you know, even if there was a different incarnation, not as Captain America, but you know for Steve Rogers, even that would feel… I’d be very cautious, just because I love that chapter of my life professionally, personally.”

Further details one Captain America 4 are being kept under wraps right now, but Marvel Studios is attending San Diego Comic-Con later this month for the first time since 2019 and expectations are running high that the studio will take the opportunity to officially unveil its Phase Five slate for 2024 and beyond. We will of course keep you posted.
