Captain Marvel tracking $350 million global opening

March 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It’s been a bit of a slow start to the box office in 2019, but it seems all that is about to change this Friday as Marvel Studios kicks off the 2019 superhero season with the release of Captain Marvel.

According to current tracking estimates, the Brie Larson-headlined superhero adventure is on course to open with $150 million in North America over the Friday-to-Sunday period, with a further $200 million from international markets for a global opening weekend in the range of $350 million.

Should those estimates prove accurate, Captain Marvel will open some $21 million shy of Marvel’s latest franchise-launcher Black Panther, which went on to gross $1.34 billion worldwide. It would also put Carol Danvers’ big screen debut ahead of the likes of Deadpool ($300.4 million), Justice League ($278.8 million) and Wonder Woman ($228.3 million).

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). It is set for release on March 8th.
