Martin Carr reviews the eighteenth episode of Supergirl season 3…There are no Dylanesque overtones to this episode whatever that tagline might suggest. For the occupants of National City there will be no ‘Shelter from the Storm’ as Reign goes on a rampage looking for that final shred of humanity keeping Sam alive. However beneath the […]
Gotham Season 4 Finale Review – ‘No Man’s Land’
Martin Carr reviews the season 4 finale of Gotham…Gunshot paralysis, cold blooded revenge and Martial Law await any and all who venture into No Man’s Land this week. Gotham has morphed into a battleground rife with vigilantes, ripe for turf war and filled with recriminations. Elements of The Killing Joke, moments of Ledger bleeding between […]
Supergirl Season 3 Episode 19 Review – ‘The Fanatical’
Martin Carr reviews the nineteenth episode of Supergirl season 3…Beyond minor parental issues, confusion concerning dual identities and cultists stealing Krypton’s version of the Arsonists Handbook, Supergirl is straight forward this week. There are dramatic set pieces, unexpected bonding moments and a consistent level of acting across the board. Where things fall down is in […]
Supergirl Season 3 Episode 20 Review – ‘Dark Side of the Moon’
Martin Carr reviews the twentieth episode of Supergirl season 3…Pink Floyd references aside this is pedestrian stuff which feels more like high end production padding than progression. Sub-plots feel like distractions, emotive exchanges like evasive manoeuvres while nothing dynamic occurs. This maybe the first time where Supergirl successfully drops a ball and fails to illicit […]
Supergirl Season 3 Episode 21 Review – ‘Not Kansas’
Martin Carr reviews the twenty-first episode of Supergirl season 3…Beyond The Wizard of Oz references there is a sense of further superhero padding as we build towards the finale next week. Montages, incidental music and happy faces abound as we bid farewell to Supergirl knowing full well that she will be returning by episode twenty […]
Supergirl Season 3 Episode 22 Review – ‘Make It Reign’
Martin Carr reviews the twenty-second episode of Supergirl season 3…Redemption in televisual terms is not normally centred round seismic shifts, tectonic anomalies or terraforming land masses. By definition redemption implies forgiveness, a coming together and understanding or […]
Supergirl Season 3 Finale Review – ‘Battles Lost and Won’
Martin Carr reviews the season 3 finale of Supergirl…Fiery pits of molten magma, villainous heretics melting like cartoon witches and time travelling antics are just a taste of this season three finale. There are also numerous emotional segues which involve teary eyed hugging, navel gazing aplenty and emotive moments with wistful pauses. In short Supergirl […]
Preacher Season 3 Episode 1 Review – ‘Angelville’
Martin Carr reviews the first episode of Preacher season 3…Coated in a sheen of Louisiana voodoo, seeping sultry from pores coated in Southern sweat and welcoming us back with plantation melodrama, this third go round shows potential. Penned by Breaking Bad alumni Sam Catlin and featuring Michael Slovis behind the camera, ‘Angelville’ cross cuts between […]
Preacher Season 3 Episode 2 Review – ‘Sonsabitches’
Martin Carr reviews the second episode of Preacher season 3…Extracting a soul appears to be easy involving wheels, levers and foot pumps coupled with numerous lengths of rubber tubing and eager operatives in tow to hold down poor unfortunates. Throw in the needles, screaming, unsterilized insertion of blunt metals through paper-thin skin and you have […]
Preacher Season 3 Episode 3 Review – ‘Gonna Hurt’
Martin Carr reviews the third episode of Preacher season 3…Down in the darkness they run an unlicensed fight club with a difference. Donning his trademark top hat all battered, burnished and soiled with the souls of those long passed, Jesse Custer beckons you in. Participants are chained, malnourished, consigned to purgatory and looking for no […]
