CBS orders Magnum, P.I. reboot to series

May 14, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Get ready for the return of Thomas Magnum, as CBS has officially granted a series order to a reboot of the classic private eye drama Magnum, P.I., which sees Jay Hernandez (Suicide Squad) taking on the role made famous by Tom Selleck.

The new series will focus on Hernandez’s Magnum, “a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore ‘TC’ Calvin and Orville ‘Rick’ Wright, as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins, Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to.”

The pilot episode of Magnum, P.I. has been directed by Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond), with Peter Lenkov – the man behind the reboots of Hawaii Five-O and MacGyver) – developing the series.

CBS has already announced that it has given a series order to a Murphy Brown revival, although as yet there’s been no word as to whether it will be adding the Cagney & Lacey reboot to its slate.

The original Magnum, P.I. – which saw Selleck starring alongside John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley and Larry Mantetti – ran for eight seasons on CBS between 1980 and 1988. ABC previously attempted to reboot the series last year, with a sequel that would have followed Magnum’s daughter Lily ‘Tommy’ Magnum.
