Charlize Theron turned down the role of Wonder Woman’s mother Queen Hippolyta

May 25, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Given the success the two enjoyed with 2003’s critically acclaimed Monster, it certainly won’t come as a surprise to learn that Charlize Theron was offered the opportunity to reunite with director Patty Jenkins on Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Wonder Woman.

Theron ultimately turned down the opportunity however, and now it seems we know why as the actress has revealed that she wasn’t offered the part of the Amazon Princess, but rather her mother Queen Hippolyta, played by Connie Nielsen in the 2017 movie.

“I did not turn the role of Wonder Woman down,” said Theron on Watch What Happens Live. “This is a great example of how Hollywood slaps you in the face when you start aging. So somebody had said to me, ‘There’s action on this thing, Wonder Woman, we just want to make you aware of it,’ and I was like, ‘I’m not familiar with it, I mean, what does Wonder Woman do?’ And then this person said, ‘No, it’s for Wonder Woman’s mom.’ It’s fine. It was the defining moment where I crossed over. And I wasn’t fully aware of it.”

While Theron missed out on Wonder Woman, she may soon be leading her own movie in another of Hollywood’s blockbuster mega-franchises, with a report earlier this month stating that Universal is considering a spinoff film for her The Fate of the Furious character Cipher.
