Variety is reporting that Chloe Grace Moretz is set to star in the title role in The Little Mermaid, Universal Pictures and Working Title’s upcoming live-action retealling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, which will be scripted by Richard Curtis (Love Actually).
The project originally had Sofia Coppola attached to direct, although the filmmaker parted ways with the studios earlier in the year citing creative differences, with a source for Variety claiming that Coppola’s unwillingness to cast Moretz could have been a contributing factor.
At this point, there’s no word on a release date for The Little Mermaid, but with Disney mining virtually its entire animated back catalogue for live-action adaptations, you can bet Universal and Working Title will want to move quickly.
