Christophe Gans will return to the fog to direct a Silent Hill movie sequel

October 20, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Earlier in year Brotherhood of the Wolf and original Silent Hill director Christophe Gans announced that he had a sequel script written and ready to go, but you did wonder whether, much like the characters trapped in this tiny town of terror, it would ever see the light of day.

Fear not, or fear a lot, because Konami announced during their Silent Hill Transmission event that not only are they developing new Silent Hill games, but that Gans will be directing a new movie called Return to Silent Hill.

Konami Digital Entertainment assistant-producer Rui Naito broke the news of the sequel, revealing that the original’s producer/director team of Victor Hadida (Resident Evil) and Christophe Gans had approached them with an idea for a follow-up, which they thought was a “fantastic concept and script”.

Gans said that for they sequel they have decided to “go back to the best of these stories” and that it would be adapted from Silent Hill 2 to tell the story of “a guy coming back to Silent Hill, where he has known a great love, and what he’s going to find is a pure nightmare”. Sharing concept art from the movie Hadida added that Return to Silent Hill will centre on “whether a man can go deep in hell to bring back the soul or person he loved most in his life”.

The 2006 film is a stunning and slavishly faithful visual trip into the darker recesses of the Konami game, but plot is also as baffling and bonkers as the source material, leading to an impenetrable film for your casual cinemagoer, a 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and just over $100M at the worldwide box-office. A 2012 sequel Silent Hill: Revelation didn’t fare much better, earning a 10% rating and $55M.
