Comic Book Review – Star Trek #44

April 15, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek #44…

“Eurydice” Part 2 of 3. The Five Year Mission leading up to 2016’s blockbuster STAR TREK movie continues here, as Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise find themselves in the clutches of the Dark Market Syndicate deep in the Delta Quadrant. Don’t miss this all-new story produced in the association with STAR TREK writer/producer Roberto Orci!

Continuing the trek amongst the stars for the Enterprise crew – in the Delta Quadrant – we enter Part 2 immediately after the close of Part 1 and it’s all going great up until one moment, a trading moment and when you read it you’ll be thinking “What!?” as I did.

With Eurydice Warp-Tractoring the Enterprise to an unknown location to help purchase Dilithium crystals – so the Enterprise can finally get back to warping home – Kirk is becoming restless with not being in control of his vessel.  Eurydice, using a rather impressive teleportation device, brings Kirk aboard her ship and woos him; Kirk is unaware the comms are still open and that the Enterprise Bridge crew can see this wooing.  It’s at this point they arrive at their location, The Dark Market.  The crew locate the Dilithium crystals – after being on board for a short time – for which the crew completes a rather shocking trade.  After this Eurydice goes on to complete her trade with the Syndicate, the owners of the Dark Market.

On the whole Star Trek – Eurydice Part 2 is enjoyable, there are a couple of moments within the story that bother me like the clear trap which the crew of the Enterprise are walking into – if it was any more obvious there would be neon arrows in the Dark Market saying “Trap this way!”. Along with this we also get Kirk and company’s trade for the crystals which is amazingly stupid, so ridiculous that you can’t believe that it’s being made!  Pushing these things aside however I did enjoy the issue.

Mike Johnson as added a touch of original Kirk to our NuKirk, with the alien female romancing and the frustration at losing control of his ship, and it’s fun to see these features creeping in.  The art from Tony Shasteen as ever is a mix of I like it / I don’t like it!  The transporter effect looks amazing and the Dark Market looks impressive, but then the art changes as the characters can look okay, but then they appear to have distorted awful faces which have been squashed into panels, or in some cases they look pasted on to the page.  In one example Spock, Scotty and Uhura are actually “Copy & Pasted” from the panel above to the panel below.

It’ll be interesting to see what the crew are going to do next. I feel I know who is going to help them get out of this situation but I’d like to see how it’s going to happen.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
