Comic Book Review – The Fix #7

December 23, 2016 by Emma Withington

Emma Withington reviews The Fix #7…

Mac works on a shady criminal’s behalf.

Elaina’s dildo tore away her teddy bear’s innocence as it burst from its warm, fuzzy chest. This is what her assailants sought on the night of her murder, Roy discovered, but why? Never mind that! This week we catch up with Mac and Pretzels, who are inseparable aside from Mac’s moments of intimacy with his girlfriend…maybe not even then.

The opening montage is a direct inversion of the The Fix #4’s which portrayed Mac’s idyllic romantic relationship, before the cracks inevitably shatter this idyll; namely the presence of Pretzels. The Fix #7 opens with Mac and Pretzels’ buddy-cop-mance, before Pretzels, once again, causes coital calamity and continues to drive a wedge between Mac and his girlfriend. However, this is the least of Mac’s worries as Josh’s enigmatic associate Deal (first spotted in The Fix 4) is about to put Mac and Pretzels’ relationship to the test…

This week’s highlight involves our favourite psychopath. Just when you think Josh can’t get creepier, he dials up the psychotic as we reach a spread entitled ‘Josh’s Cookbook’. While the instructions devised by Nick Spencer sound as harmless as Jamie Oliver’s 30 Minute Meals, Steve Lieber presents the perfect visual contrast between Josh’s serene demeanour and the butchered corpse meat that he is lovingly preparing to feed his dogs.

As far as the Mac solo outings are concerned, The Fix #7 is the best thus far. The plot thickens to a particularly gooey consistency, driving the story forward as new dynamics come into play. Previously unanswered questions are explored and Mac’s side of the story begins to offer more intrigue, without moments of ‘where’s Roy?’ experienced in previous Mac issues.

Rating: 9/10
