Comic Book Review – The Red Seas Book Two: Fire Across the Deep

March 23, 2015 by Andrew Newton

Andrew Newton reviews The Red Seas Book Two: Fire Across the Deep…

Having earned the animosity of Satan after foiling his diabolical plans, Jack Dancer and his rag-tag crew find themselves at odds with the twisted goals of the powerful mage and servant of the Devil, Professor Karel Toten. Encountering spirits, gods, and the monstrous denizens of the deep, Dancer steels himself for the final battle against the forces of darkness…

The epic series of high adventure, occult action and piratical shenanigans reaches its exciting climax in this concluding volume of Ian Edginton and Steve Yeowell’s The Red Seas!

Ian Edginton brings us more supernatural adventures on the high seas as Captain Jack Dancer and his crew return in The Red Seas Book 2: Fire Across the Deep. Once again his passion for the pirate genre shows through perfectly and he brings to life the characters of Jack Dancer and his crew in a way few others can.

In The Red Seas Book 2, Jack Dancer and his crew go up against Vikings, sea demons, ice giants and once again Satan. They encounter Gods of all varieties, sorcerers and robots (of sorts). Though actual storyline aside, I think Edginton had more fun writing this book as there seems to be an increased use of humour (look out for The Goodies ‘Kitten Kong’ reference hidden away) which had me laughing out loud a few times and got me some funny looks from the wife.

Steve Yeowell’s artwork once again adds to the story and emphasises the mood and excitement that cannot be easily conveyed by words alone.  If I have one criticism with this comic book it is sadly with the lettering as in some areas the lines merge slightly making it slightly more difficult to read fluidly but this is a minor detail.

Edginton and Yeowell appear to work very successfully together and this second book, like the first, has been an amazing read.  The shear size and depth of the story, not to mention the beautifully drawn cover, makes this another title worthy of the book shelf.
