Danny Boyle discusses his exit from Bond 25

March 29, 2019 by Gary Collinson

There was quite the excitement last year when it was announced that Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle and his frequent screenwriter collaborator John Hodge would be tackling 007’s 25th official outing, only for Boyle to exit the director’s chair on Bond 25 a few months later due to reported creative differences with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli and star Daniel Craig.

With filming on Bond 25 now underway under Boyle’s replacement Cary Joji Fukunaga, the Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire helmer has been chatting to Empire Online about his departure from the movie.

“I learned quite a lot about myself with Bond,” said Boyle. “I work in partnership with writers and I am not prepared to break it up. We were working very, very well but they didn’t want to go down that route with us. So we decided to part company, and it would be unfair to say what it was because I don’t know what Cary [Fukunaga] is going to do. I got a very nice message from him and I gave him my best wishes.”

“It is just a great shame,” he continued. “What John [Hodge] and I were doing, I thought, was really good. It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good. You have to believe in your process and part of that is the partnership I have with a writer. It is like someone coming and saying, ‘Hey, we are going to give you a different editor.’ Those fundamental partnerships are vital.”

Bond 25 is set for release on April 8th 2020 and features returning stars Daniel Craig as James Bond, Ben Whishaw as Q, Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny and Lea Seydoux as Dr. Madeleine Swann, while both Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Billy Magnussen (Maniac) have been linked to roles.
