Deadpool & Wolverine crosses $1 billion at the global box office

August 11, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Having failed to replicate the kind of critical and commercial success of the Infinity Saga these past few years coming off the monster box office of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios decided to hit the brakes on its ever-expanding slate, pushing everything back and leaving just Deadpool & Wolverine as its sole big screen offering of 2024.

Well, it looks like the decision is now paying dividends, as after smashing opening records for an R-rated release in its opening weekend at the end of July, the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led team-up has now crossed the billion dollar mark at the global box office, retaining top spot in its third weekend lifting the film to $1.03 billion worldwide.

Deadpool & Wolverine is only the second film of 2024 to reach the $1 billion mark so far after Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out 2 (the animated sequel has earned $1.594 billion to date), and the third Marvel film to hit the milestone since Endgame (and the first not to have Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as the lead). It has also surpassed both Deadpool ($782.6 million) and Deadpool 2 ($785.8 million) as well as every other past Fox Marvel release, and is just days away from overtaking DC’s Joker to claim the crown as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Hugh Jackman really is going to be doing this until he’s 90…

Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Shawn Levy (Free Guy) and stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman alongside Fox/Marvel veterans Jennifer Garner (Elektra), Stefan Kapacic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), Lewis Tan (Shatterstar), Rob Delaney (Peter), Aaron Stanford (Pyro), and Tyler Mane (Sabretooth) with new additions including Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) as Mr. Paradox and Emma Corrin (The Crown) as Cassandra Nova.
