Denis Villeneuve expresses his interest in directing a Star Wars film

November 29, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Denis Villeneuve has said that he would be “intrigued” by the possibility of the directing a Star Wars movie at some point in the future.

Star Wars is here to stay, and as long as these movies continue to break the box office upon release, we can expect plenty more of them in the years to come. That of course creates a number of vacancies for directors, especially when it comes to the anthology movies such as Rogue One.

With that being said, one of Hollywood’s hottest directors, Denis Villeneuve – not foreign to sci-fi himself with Arrival and this year’s Blade Runner 2049 – has expressed his interest in being involved in the Star Wars franchise.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director said: “It’s something that, again it’s like, I would be intrigued. I don’t know, it’s very difficult. What is dangerous with Star Wars right now is it’s become its own vocabulary. I would love to see them, I think Rogue One was a very interesting attempt to get out of the mold.”

Villeneuve also expressed his approval for Rian Johnson’s new trilogy that will focus away from the Skywalker story, and has said that doing something outside of the main saga would be interesting to him:

“I think it would be a great idea to get out of there and to go on a new part of the galaxy, that I would be open to.”

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 15th in the States and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, and Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
