Denis Villeneuve says his Dune movie won’t take inspiration from David Lynch’s adaptation

November 20, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Following his work on Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is set to return to the sci-fi genre for his next project, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novel Dune.

Villeneuve’s adaptation won’t be the first time that the 1965 book has been brought to the screen, with David Lynch helming a rather divisive take on the material in 1984, which was slammed by many critics and fans of the book, but has since developed its own cult following.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, Villeneuve has revealed that he won’t be taking any inspiration from Lynch’s film, and is instead looking to make “the adaptation of my dreams”.

“It will not have any link with the David Lynch movie,” said Villeneuve. “I’m going back to the book, and going to the images that came out when I read it. I mean David Lynch is one of the best filmmakers alive, I have massive respect for him. But when I saw his adaptation I was impressed, but it was not what I had dreamed of, so I’m trying to make the adaptation of my dreams.”
