DeWanda Wise to headline Blumhouse’s immersive horror Imaginary

November 8, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Anyone who has been to see box-office smash Five Nights At Freddy’s has been teased with a mysterious trailer for Blumhouse Productions’ latest horror Imaginary. Shrouded in mystery-box secrecy, a few details have begun to emerge about the movie, not least the fact that it will be executive produced and star Jurassic World: Dominion‘s DeWanda Wise.

Currently a theaters-only promo, the Imaginary trailer begins with a child’s voice asking “Hi, wanna play a game with me? Close your eyes and use your imagination,” before unleashing a cacophony of spooky sounds to scare the audience. When the voice prompts viewers to open their eyes, they are presented with a series of creepy images, including a missing child poster, some demonic figures, and what appears to be a funhouse filled with doors.

Described as an immersive horror, Imaginary is directed by Jeff Wadlow (Fantasy Island, Truth or Dare) and co-produced between Blumhouse and Lionsgate Productions.

While details are few and far between, Keri Moore, Lionsgate’s co-president of worldwide theatrical marketing, told Variety that “Something you see across cultures is that children have a unique access to the spirit world. What if their imaginary friends are something from the spirit world? What if these imaginary friends were real, and what if when you left one of them, that made them upset?”

The film’s official synopsis reads; “Jessica (Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family. Her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister.”
