Director Colin Trevorrow exits Star Wars: Episode IX due to creative differences

September 5, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Disney and Lucasfilm will need to find a new filmmaker to round out its Sequel Trilogy, with the studios announcing that they have parted ways with Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) on Star Wars: Episode IX due to creative differences.

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX,” reads the official statement. “Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

Lucasfilm has recently brought in Jack Thorne to work on the screenplay, which has originally been penned by Trevorrow and his frequent collaborator Derek Connolly.

According to EW, there have been rumblings of discontent for several months, which have now come to a head. It’s another blow for Trevorrow, whose latest film The Book of Henry was savaged by critics and audiences.

Lucasfilm hasn’t had an easy ride with directors as of late; Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) was fired from a planned Anthology movie, as were Phil Lord and Chris Miller on the Han Solo movie, with Ron Howard coming in to replace them. Meanwhile, Tony Gilroy was brought in to oversee extensive reshoots on the Gareth Edwards-directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

As yet, there’s no word on a potential replacement, although EW is speculating that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ J.J. Abrams or Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson could land the job of finishing the trilogy.

Are you disappointed that Trevorrow is gone from Episode IX? Who would you like to see as his replacement? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
