Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens to a magical $450 million worldwide

May 9, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

You didn’t need to visit fourteen million six-hundred and five alternate futures to predict that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was going to top the box office this weekend, but it still managed to conjure up spectacular results in its debut frame, making $185 million domestically and $265 million overseas, for a whopping $450 million bow.

It was the second biggest pandemic era opening behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the sixth biggest global film opening weekend in history. Multiverse of Madness debuted in 49 countries, where it coined in $30 million from Korea, $24.7 million in the U.K., $21.5 million from Mexico, $16.3 million in Brazil, $12.7 million from India, $12.6 million in Australia and $12 million from Germany. Along with many of its immediate MCU predecessors (Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, The Eternals) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wasn’t given a release in the lucrative Chinese market.

If you need any indication about what an immovable all-consuming box-office beast the Marvel machine has become, the original standalone Doctor Strange grossed $232M domestically and $677M worldwide back in 2016, but now these films have become a singular narrative thread, the must-watch factor has meant that Multiverse of Madness will probably have passed the first film’s total by the time you’ve finished reading this sentence.
