Doctor Who: Christmas – It’s a Wonderful War and Other Stories delivers festive Who

December 3, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Big Finish Productions has got into the Christmas spirit and released Doctor Who: Christmas – It’s a Wonderful War and Other Stories. This new release features four brand-new full-cast audio adventures set across the Whoniverse, with adventures for the Sixth and Eighth Doctors, as well as Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan, and many more iconic characters.

Christmas is an occasion celebrated throughout time and space, but it’s also the time when monsters and alien invaders know that humanity lets their guard down a little. Fortunately, in the following four adventures, the Doctor or one of his friends is never far away.

In Unholy Night – a Missy adventure by Noga Flaishon, Missy is stranded on the frozen world of Jul, and it is her worst nightmare. The people of the Noel Falls settlement are sickeningly hospitable, and there are wonderful Christmas decorations and magnificent celebrations everywhere. But the settlement has a secret, once you arrive there, you can never leave. Missy is going to need all her wit and malice to escape with her sanity intact.

This tale stars Michelle Gomez as Missy, alongside Simon Kane, Paul Bown, Frances Jeater, Roxanne Morgan, Harry Myers, and Beth Chalmers.

In Legacy of Blood – a Sixth Doctor, Ellie Higson and Leela adventure by Julian Richards, Ellie is plagued by memories of her younger days with Henry Gordon Jago and Professor George Litefoot. When she is drawn to the village of Dunstanton-on-Thames, Ellie is reunited with the Sixth Doctor as he tracks down an ancient evil.

Colin Baker reprises his role as the beloved Sixth Doctor, with Louise Jameson as Leela and Lisa Bowerman as Ellie Higson. It also stars Harriet Kershaw, Nicholas Briggs, Joanna Monro, and Holly Jackson-Walters.

Presents of Mind by Mark Wright finds Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan on a trip to Aunt Lavinia’s house. But when the train they are on gets stopped by a frosty alien attack, the pair wonder if they will get home for Christmas.

This story features the talents of Sadie Miller and Sarah, Christopher Naylor as Harry, John Leeson as K9 and Annette Badland as Lavinia.

Finally, It’s a Wonderful War by Jonathan S Powell is a Time War-era Eighth Doctor adventure where the Doctor becomes the guardian angel arriving to save Foreman Galen Smith and his people from the Daleks.

Paul McGann once again becomes the Eighth Doctor, with Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks. This tale also stars Rosemary Ashe, Richard David-Caine, Cassie Bradley, Andrew Wincott, Beth Chalmers, Jonathan S Powell, and Alan Cox.

Doctor Who: Christmas – It’s a Wonderful War and Other Stories is available from Big Finish for £24.99 for the download and £30.99 for the limited collector’s edition CD box set and download.
