Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee O’Malley developing Scott Pilgrim: The Anime with original movie cast

March 30, 2023 by Ricky Church

Scott Pilgrim is heading back to screens in a brand new way! Scott Pilgrim vs. The World director Edgar Wright has announced he, Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and screenwriter BenDavid Grabinski are teaming with Netflix to develop Scott Pilgrim: The Anime with the film’s original cast reprising their roles.

First published in 2004, the graphic novel series followed Scott Pilgrim as he began dating the mysterious Ramona Flowers. He soon discovers though he has to fight and defeat seven of Ramona’s ex-boyfriends, who have formed the League of Evil Exes, to officially win her hand. The series follows Scott as he dates Ramona while being forced to mature and grow up while also detailing the struggles his friends go through, both in dealing with him and their own lives.

On Twitter Wright said “After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of ‘Scott Pilgrim’, I’m thrilled to say one is IMMINENT, with the whole cast back together and… you are going to lose your minds. One of the proudest, most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim. Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the gang on an actual project. Until now… Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim with the geniuses at Science Saru that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it.”

This is not a drill! This is happening!

In a separate tweet, Wright was asked if the team considered the band Anamanaguchi  who developed the music for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, to which Wright only replied “You will be very happy.” In fact, Anamanaguchi composed the music in the announcement teaser for the series.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was released in 2010. While it did not perform too well at the box office, premiering the same weekend of The Expendables and Eat, Pray, Love, the film has become something of a cult favourite due to the popularity of O’Malley’s graphic novels and how well the film adapted the video game and anime-influenced setting. In 2020, Wright and most of the cast reunited for a virtual table read of the script for the film’s 10th anniversary.

Scott Pilgrim: The Anime will see the original cast reprising their roles with Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves, Johnny Simmons as Young Neil, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, Mae Whitman as Roxie and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.
