Elisabeth Moss joins Barry Levinson’s Francis and The Godfather

February 10, 2021 by Ricky Church

Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man) has joined the cast of Barry Levinson’s upcoming film Francis and The Godfather, telling the tumultuous story behind the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s mafia classic The Godfather.

Per Deadline, she’ll star alongside Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) in the film and will play Eleanor Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola’s wife. Isaac will play Coppola while Gyllenhaal will portray Paramount producer and studio executive Robert Evans.

“I’ve wanted to work with her for a long time,” said Levinson. “I couldn’t be more excited about her joining the film.  Every performance of Elisabeth’s is nothing short of exceptional.”

The film was written by Andrew Farotte with Levinson having re-developed it. Coppola himself endorsed the film and Levinson’s vision, saying “Any movie that Barry Levinson makes about anything, will be interesting and worthwhile!”

Despite being one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time, The Godfather had a very dramatic behind the scenes story as the studio thought Coppola was too inexperienced to make a film of this scale, arguments were made over the casting, production delays and more. Godfather star Marlon Brando, who would go on to win an Academy Award for his portrayal of family patriarch and mob boss Vito Corleone, even threatened to quit the film should Coppola be fired. Nearly 50 years since its release, The Godfather is still as as renowned as it was then.
