Exclusive interview with The Nice Guys star Angourie Rice

June 5, 2016 by Scott J. Davis

With Shane Black’s new film The Nice Guys now in UK cinemas [read our review here], Flickering Myth’s Scott J. Davis sat down with Hollywood newcomer Angourie Rice to talk about the film, auditioning with Ryan Gosling and working with fellow Aussie Russell Crowe.

Rice has received rave reviews (and rightly so) for her performance in the film where she stars as Holly March, the teenage daughter of Ryan Gosling’s Holland. Fresh off the plane from Austrailia, Rice had not read any of the early reviews for the film and said that the whole experience of promoting the film has been pretty hectic: “It’s been crazy! I’ve found myself saying crazy a lot in the past couple of weeks. I didn’t expect this to happen and didn’t think I’d get the role – I’m pleased that I did but this is an environment that is so far from what I’m used to.”

With this being her first Hollywood role, Rice was of understandably nervous about auditioning for the film, but being in Australia and sending tapes to the US were easy enough without an audience. That changed however when she was flown to the US for an audition with Gosling: “I auditioned three times so I auditioned once in Australia and sent the tape off and they liked it, I came back with a second audition tape and sent that in and the third time they flew me over to LA where I auditioned with Ryan in front of the director and producer Joel Silver – it was pretty scary!”

The character of Holly is not your typical daughter who politely stays at home while Dad is off hunting down bad guys – she’s right there alongside him and Healy (Crowe) as they chase down leads, search for clues and go swimming with mermaids: “She’s really head strong and independent and she can take of herself and she’s very caring which I love about her – she always goes back to save people.”
