Exclusive: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is “very happy” with what he has seen of Aquaman so far

March 15, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Get Down, The Greatest Showman) is set to join the DC Extended Universe this coming December as he takes on the role of Black Manta in opposite Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry in Aquaman.

During an interview at SXSW to discuss his new film Boundaries, Abdul-Mateen confirmed to Flickering Myth’s Rafael Motamayor that he’s been very impressed by what he’s seen Aquaman so far, and also touched upon shooting in Australia.

“I can’t say much about that,” said Abdul-Mateen. “I have seen some of it, and I’m very happy with what I’ve seen thus far. Australia was beautiful. They have a word there, they say ‘cruising’,  which means that it’s really, really comfortable, and low stress, and just beautiful, a lot of greenery and beaches and things like that.”

Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on December 21st 2018.
