Fifty Shades of Grey shatters records at the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 13th February to Sunday 15th February 2015…

Well, given its colossal worldwide opening, this won’t come as a surprise at all, but Fifty Shades of Grey has shattered records here in the UK with its debut weekend of £13,550,290 giving it the biggest ever 18 certificate opening, the biggest ever non-sequel/franchise opening, and the biggest ever Valentine’s Day weekend opening.

Oh, it’s also the biggest opening of 2015 to date…

With Fifty Shades of Grey dominating at the multiplexes, the only other newcomer to crack the top ten this week was the family flick Peppa Pig: The Golden Boots, which earned £687,417 to place in sixth. Meanwhile, another family offering Paddington reentered the chart in tenth in its twelfth weekend on screens.

2. Big Hero 6 – £1,841,570 weekend (3 weeks)
3. Shaun the Sheep Movie – £1,736,986 weekend (2 weeks)
4. Kingsman: The Secret Service – £1,605,942 weekend (3 weeks)
5. Jupiter Ascending – £827,604 weekend (2 weeks)
6. Peppa Pig: The Golden Boots – £687,417 weekend (New)
7. American Sniper – £641,174 weekend (5 weeks)
8. The Theory of Everything – £522,465 weekend (7 weeks)
9. Selma – £429,086 weekend (2 weeks)
10. Paddington – £208,857 weekend (12 weeks)
