Anyone who’s seen Candyman will be aware that Nia DaCosta knows a thing or two about the blurred lines between heroism and villainy, and she has applying those expertise, along with her own Marvel credentials – she refers to herself as “Marvel trash” – while speaking out about who she thinks is to blame for the MCU’s most pivotal moment; the Thanos snap.
DaCosta, who is currently filming Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels in London, was talking to Inverse about her career evolution, what it’s like to work on a really big studio film, and how she would define a hero.
This final point got her effusing about Batman, Superman, and the way she views Candyman as a hero, saying “I think Candyman, especially in the way we shifted his lore bit in my film, is a hero.” This led her onto discussing who she felt was to blame for Avengers: Infinity War‘s iconic snap sequence, which fans often lay at the feet of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, but DaCosta points the finger at another member of the Avengers, revealing “Something I like to say a bit flippantly about Captain America is that the Snap is all his fault because he was trying to do his best, trying to do the right thing.
DaCosta continued. “There is a world in which he’s a villain because, at the end of the day, he should have just sacrificed Vision. He chose one robot’s life, albeit a sentient one, over literally the entire universe. There’s a sort of anti-hero in that if you want to look at it through that lens. People would say I’m crazy for thinking that way, but there’s something connected to the journey of the anti-hero and the hero.”

The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and features a cast that includes Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Zawe Ashton as a mystery villain.
