UPDATE: First glimpse of footage from Game of Thrones season 7, Conor McGregor joins the cast

December 7, 2016 by Gary Collinson

We’ve got an extra long wait for the return of Game of Thrones next year, with season seven not set to get underway until the summer, but HBO has decided to give us our first ever-so-brief glimpse at what lies ahead thanks to a promo for their 2017 slate, which includes three quick shots of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams). It’s not much to go on, but it’s probably all we’re getting for the next few months!

Meanwhile, in some unconfirmed news/rumour/potentially made up tabloid reporting, it seems that UFC champion Conor McGregor could be heading to Westeros, with The Sunday Life (via Collider) stating that: “It’s been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of Game of Thrones. He was headhunted as it were by HBO, as one of the Game of Thrones directors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show.”

Here’s a video of McGregor sparring with Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, a.k.a. The Mountain…

UPDATE: UFC’s Dana White has confirmed McGregor’s casting, telling Fox Sports Live that: “I knew that a few months ago that they were interested in putting him in the show. And I’m glad he did it. It’ll be great. The show’s huge, it’s awesome and I’m excited for him.” Watchers on the Wall is reporting that he’ll play a crew member of Euron Greyjoy’s ship The Silence.

The seventh season of Game of Thrones will get underway on HBO in the summer.
