First-look image from the Aquaman solo movie, James Wan and Jason Momoa say film is a “totally different beast”

December 7, 2017 by Ricky Church

First introduced in a quick cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before giving a prominent role in Justice League, Jason Momoa will soon be starring in his own Aquaman film, directed by The Conjuring’s James Wan. The film doesn’t come out until December 21st, 2018, but Entertainment Weekly has released the first official photo from the film. Check it out here…

Wan and Momoa also spoke with EW about how different Aquaman, both as a character and the film itself, will be compared to Justice League. Much like Clark Kent and Diana Prince, Arthur Curry is a man of two worlds; his father was a regular human, but his mother was the queen of Atlantis, making him the rightful heir to the throne.

“Justice League was only a weekend in Arthur Curry’s life,” Momoa said. “This is a totally different beast. In Aquaman, you see when his parents met and what happened to him. Then the little boy being raised and finding his powers and going through that and never being accepted on either side. And then becoming this man who puts up all these walls. You just slowly see this man harden up and be completely reluctant wanting to be king and not knowing what to do with these powers he has. I think James Wan just killed it.”

Wan also spoke about the film’s feel and style, saying: “It’s going to look very different, it will feel very different — aesthetically, tonally, story-wise — it’s my own take. It’s a much more a traditional action-adventure quest movie.”

When WB first approached him for a DC film, he was given the choice between directing The Flash and Aquaman, but rather than choosing the more popular Flash, he decided to take on Aquaman out of a desire to show the audience how cool Aquaman really is and do something different:

“Aquaman has been the joke of the comic book world, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought how cool that would be,” said Wan. “Let’s take the character everybody makes fun of and do something really interesting with him.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on December 21st 2018.
