Five TV Shows That Could Help the Marvel Netflix Universe

September 23, 2017 by Liam Hoofe

Liam Hoofe looks at five new shows Netflix could add to their Marvel Universe…

When Marvel kickstarted the Netflix branch of their universe with Daredevil back in 2015, expectations were understandably high. Marvel, being Marvel, delivered on those expectations and then some, giving us one of their finest properties to date. They then continued this with their second show, Jessica Jones, which equally defied all expectations.

Sadly, the shows have not been able to maintain that degree of quality. Daredevil season two and Luke Cage were solid but terribly uneven seasons, Iron Fist outright sucked, and The Defenders felt like it did the bare minimum needed to pass.  This current trend of dropping quality is quite worrying and the shows need to find their groove again if they are to maintain their loyal viewership. News broke this week that The Defenders was the lowest viewed show in its first month of any of the Netflix releases to date and that won’t sit too well with the powers that be.

The next series to arrive on Netflix is The Punisher, and fans are extremely optimistic about this. Frank Castle was the best thing about the second season of Daredevil and a stand-alone show could be one of the company’s best to date.  If The Punisher is a success, it will likely lead Marvel to take a look at other ways of expanding their universe. Let’s take a look at five other shows, either original or spin-offs, that could help save the Marvel Netflix Universe.

Heroes for Hire

How do you solve a problem like Danny Rand? The character was easily the worst thing about The Defenders, and the less said about Iron Fist, the better. Those in power seem adamant on having him as a focal point for the universe though, so why not partner him up with Luke Cage, something fans have been calling for ever since the duo were announced.

Danny and Luke’s exchanges in The Defenders were easily Danny’s best scenes in the MCU so far, and the character works much better when he is not so po-faced. With The Hand defeated, Danny has no current enemies to contend with, while Luke has to deal with Shades and Mariah from season one. Having Danny and Luke team up to take these two down could prove pretty fun and add a much-needed lighter side to Danny’s character.

Daughters of the Dragon

Another spin-off fans have been begging to see ever since both characters were introduced into the MCU. Misty Knight and Colleen Wing are two of the best characters in the TV universe and fans surely would be delighted to see them given their own spin-off show.

The concept was teased in The Defenders, when the two, along with Claire Temple, teamed up to take on parts of The Hand while The Defenders went after Elektra and Danny. Misty has now also lost her hand, which is an even bigger indication that this combination could be coming.

Of course, the show wouldn’t have to stick to the comics, and there would be nothing stopping Claire from also being heavily involved in proceedings. The success of Jessica Jones may also be a big factor, with Netflix perhaps looking to have more female-driven shows in the near future.
