Flashdance is being rebooted as a TV series for Paramount+

October 25, 2020 by Gary Collinson

With CBS All Access set to rebrand to Paramount+ in the new year, Paramount has delved into its archive to add a new project to the upcoming slate for the streaming service, with THR reporting that development is underway on a TV reboot of the 1983 romantic dance drama Flashdance.

According to the trade, “the new take will revolve around a young Black woman with ballet dreams and a strip club reality who struggles to find her place in the world while navigating romance, money, art, friendship and how to love herself.”

Directed by Adrian Lyne, Flashdance starred Jennifer Beals as Alex, an exotic dancer and steel mill worker who harbours aspirations of attending ballet school and becoming a professional ballerina. It marked the first collaboration between producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, and was a smash hit at the box office grossing over $200 million.

The new Flashdance pilot is being written by Tracy McMillan (Runaways), while Angela Robinson (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women) will direct and executive produce alongside Lynda Obst, an associate producer on the original movie.
