Free Fire director Ben Wheatley has reportedly been offered a Marvel movie

May 1, 2018 by Tom Beasley

British filmmaker Ben Wheatley, best known for mad bullet ballet Free Fire, has reportedly been offered a “big Marvel film”, according to a passing comment on The Adam Buxton Podcast.

Buxton was interviewing comedian and actor Bob Mortimer, who suggested a road trip movie project had been scuppered by the offer to Wheatley, though Mortimer did not elaborate any further.

Mortimer was talking about his future projects, when he came to the topic of trying to get a narrative movie made.

He said: “We’ve got [a script] in at the moment that nearly got going that we hope we’ll make which is about Michael Jackson. He left a glove, one of his training gloves that he used when he wasn’t on stage, and it’s a very valuable item now and there’s a few people trying to get ownership of it. It’s just a road movie thing. But we were about to start that and then, you know Ben Wheatley? Ben Wheatley got offered one of the big Marvel films, so it wasn’t for us to say ‘you ain’t doing that, Ben, you’ve got to do our thing’.”

Wheatley currently has a packed slate of projects, including sci-fi thriller Freakshift with Alicia Vikander and Armie Hammer and the mysterious Colin You Anus, which he shot rather quietly at the beginning of this year.

With that said, he has expressed interest in the past in making a version of Marvel Zombies, which sees various comic book heroes and villains portrayed as members of the walking dead.
