George Clooney to direct The Tender Bar

July 25, 2020 by Gary Collinson

He’s currently busy putting the final touches to his next film, the Netflix sci-fi thriller The Midnight Sky, but George Clooney already has one eye on his next directorial project with Deadline reporting that he’s in talks to direct and produce The Tender Bar for Amazon Studios.

Based on the memoirs of J.R. Moehringer, The Tender Bar follows a young man growing up in Long Island seeking out father figures among the patrons at his uncle’s bar. In was originally in development at Sony Pictures, with Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures) attached to direct, but was put into turnaround with Amazon subsequently picking up the rights.

Clooney is also attached to direct Boys in the Boat, a drama based upon the University of Washington rowing team’s gold medal success at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Nazi Germany. However, given the complexities of the shoot and the current health crisis, Clooney has opted instead to make The Tender Bar his next project.
