God of War series adds Sonya Walger as Freya

March 27, 2026 by Ricky Church

Prime Video’s upcoming series adaptation of God of War has filled a significant role. Now joining the series is Sonya Walger (Lost) as the Valkyrie warrior Freya.

Bases on the blockbuster Playstation games, God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human. The Prime series is adapting the series reboot from Santa Monica Studio, which released God of War in 2018 and its sequel God of War Ragnarök in 2022.

Freya is a Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day. She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya’s unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.

God of War is created by Ronald D. Moore, who will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Moore is known for Star Trek: The Next Generationand Deep Space Nine, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and For All Mankind, which Walger also stars in. Outlander is currently airing its final season on Starz while For All Mankind‘s fifth season will premiere next month after already being renewed for a sixth and final season.

Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun) is directing the first two episodes of God of War, which has been given a two-season order by Prime. Production is currently taking place in Vancouver.

God of War will feature Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, Louis Cunningham as Modi, Ben Chapple as Magni, Evelyn Miller as Gna, and Island Austin as Thrud.
