Green Lantern showrunner describes the upcoming HBO Max series as “gigantic”

October 24, 2021 by EJ Moreno

For a Green Lantern television series to work, you will need a large-scale production. From epic space battles to the more significant number of actual Green Lantern corps members featured, the entire idea will be larger than life, and that’s seemingly what the team behind the upcoming HBO Max series are hyping.

While many were shocked to see no update for the Green Lantern series at DC FanDome, Seth Grahame-Smith seems to be a one-man hype train for it. In a recent interview with Collider, Grahame-Smith opened up about Green Lantern and the “big undertaking” it will be to make it happen.

“Yeah, that show is gigantic,” the filmmaker teased. “It has taken quite a bit of time to get to this point, and it’s just a big, big undertaking. It’s going really well. All I can say is that it’s going really well and there are gonna be Green Lanterns in it, and it’s gonna be on HBO Max.”

HBO Max is always looking for its next big hit, and a space superhero series with a scale, unlike any other series, could be exactly that. Later in the interview, the filmmaker opened up about his history in DC and how he became familiar with the iconic character he’ll be tackling.

“I’ll admit, I wasn’t like a huge comic book kid. I was a huge movie kid. And so, my introduction to DC Comics came through the ’89 Batman movie. When that movie came out, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, Batman is the coolest,’ and I started reading Batman comic books,” says Grahame-Smith.

“But Green Lantern is something that, to be honest with you, just came to me later, by way of just talking about doing the show,” he added. “The possibility of doing the show led me down a deep dive of Green Lantern lore. We’ll see. It’s gonna be a while before the world gets to see that, but we are very, very busy at work, as we speak.”

HBO Max’s Green Lantern will star Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott. As yet, there’s no word on a production start date or potential premiere.
