Gwendoline Christie on how she thinks Brienne will react to the Game of Thrones season 7 finale death

August 31, 2017 by George Chrysostomou

Spoilers for the season seven final of Game of Thrones follow…

Whilst still reeling from that game changing Game of Thrones finale, many are looking to those in the know for answers as to what comes next, with the cast and crew alike retelling their interpretations of the events that unfolded. One of the biggest and most satisfying moments of the final episode from last Sunday, came at the hands of the Starks, who finally rid Westeros of a truly conniving and vile character.

I am referring of course, to the death of Petyr Baelish, more commonly known as Littlefinger (a nickname from his youth due to being small and from the Fingers). The repercussions of this death will be felt across the land, especially in the North where Littlefinger fell. With Baelish essentially becoming the catalyst for the War Of The Five Kings to begin, there will be a lot of people very happy with his death.

One character whom was always distrustful of Lord Baelish was Brienne of Tarth, protector of the Stark girls, serving an oath to their now deceased mother, Catelyn Stark. However, speaking to an English tabloid, The Daily Express, actor Gwendoline Christie has revealed that she does not think Brienne will be too happy at Littlefinger’s sudden demise.

“Look at the way she beheaded Stannis. She essentially read him his rights. Although it was loaded with emotion for her, she presented it in a very official, formal way, with great nobility. So I don’t know how Brienne will react to people taking matters into their own hands at Winterfell. Brienne is about a code of honour, a code of conduct, and she never kills anyone just for the sake of it. It’s complex, though, because Brienne’s made her oath to Catelyn Stark to protect the Stark girls.”

It will be interesting to follow Brienne’s path in the final season of the series. While season seven did not give her a lot to play with, season eight is already setting up some internal conflict between her loyalties to the Stark girls and her honour to some sort of knightly code – a code that many few seem to follow nowadays in the land of Whitewalkers and Dragons.

What’s more, a reunion with Jaime seems all the more likely, as he rides North to join the battle against the Night King and his followers. This too will test the character’s loyalties. Siding with a Lannister may still be looked down upon, in spite of the alliance (or rather treachery) that has sided these two friends in the battle for life. We don’t know how long we’ll have to wait to get the answers we crave, but season 8 is certainly shaping up to be eventful for the loyal warrior of Westeros.
